David William Grimes

May 10, 1943 — January 25, 2023

Longtime Gresham resident, David Grimes died on Wednesday, January 25, 2023 at a Portland area hospital. He was 79. David William Grimes was born May 10, 1943 in Klamath Falls, Oregon to William and Avis (Ayers) Grimes. He was raised there and Graduated from Klamath Union High School in 1961. After high school he attended Multnomah School of the Bible and Judson Baptist College. On August 25, 1963 David married Sherrill Heeren in Milford, Illinois. Returning to Portland, they started their family and settled in Gresham in 1971. He started his career as a printer in 1965, working for a few Portland area printers with most years serving Artline Printing Company. He retired in 2010. Dave enjoyed singing, listening to music, gardening and model railroading. He was an active member of Haley Baptist Church and Wood Village Baptist Church, serving in many roles. But out of all his activities, Dave said nurturing a close family, spending time with his children and grandchildren, brought him the most joy and satisfaction. Dave chose Micah 6:8 to be his life verse, “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Dave lived those words and more. He was the epitome of a kind, loving and gentle soul. He exuded a warm and welcoming aura, making you feel accepted. He saw the best in people and constantly reminded them of their strengths. He was a master at encouraging others and you always felt lifted after talking to him. He was calm, humble and gracious in his interactions. He loved everyone for who they were. Compliments were always reflected back, encouraging and elevating others. He came alongside anyone in time of need, whether to lend a helping hand on a project or just giving a sympathetic ear. He was generous with his time and resources. He was a true servant and a selfless man, always pouring love into those around him. His strong influence is seen in his friends and family and will be seen for generations to come. Survivors include his wife of almost 60 years, Sherrill Grimes; brother, Daniel (Georgia Lee) Grimes; sons, Dan (Kristin) Grimes, Nathan Grimes, Andrew Grimes, Jonathan (Victoria) Grimes; daughter, Sara (Jeremy) Parker; grandchildren, Seth, Isaac, Layel and Cole Parker; Roark, Natalie, Alton, Keeley, Faith, Benjamin, Joseph, Kaitlyn, Abigail, and Liana Grimes. The family wishes to thank Lynn, Dr. Masha, Dr. Martinson, Dr. Knopf and his medical team for his excellent care through the past years. In lieu of flowers, contributions to charities close to Dave’s heart would honor him, including My Father’s House and Wood Village Baptist Church children’s ministries. To honor the true spirit of Dave, a small family gathering will be held on a future date to remember his life and effect on earth. He will be missed.
