William Joshua Courtain, fondly known as Bill, passed away peacefully at his home in Estacada on December 31, 2025, at the age of 77.
Born on June 6, 1948, in Portland, Oregon, to loving parents Ernest (Ernie) and Lois Courtain, Bill was raised in Eagle Creek on a farm and later in Estacada. His early years were filled with joy as he attended the local elementary school for 4th and 6th grade, where he became a proud member of the 4H club. Bill’s High school experience was spent in Estacada, where he played baseball, football and was a member of the History Club for all four years. He also had a love for racing cars.
Following his graduation in 1966, Bill served his country in the U.S. Army and then in the Army Corp of Engineers. In 1970, he married Gay Geil in Estacada. Their first son, Derek was born in 1973 and Brandon was born 3 years later. Bill coached several of the sports the boys were involved in. Gay moved out 16 years later and they later divorced. Bill found love again with Keri Linn, they were married for several years until her passing in 2005. For the majority of his working career, Bill dedicated himself to the U.S. Forest Service, where he was respected for his commitment to the environment and community. He shared many cherished moments and adventures with his longtime sweetheart, Janet Davis with whom he spent 16 wonderful years.
Bill had a wealth of hobbies that exemplified his love for the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and traveling, allowing him to embrace nature in all its forms.
Bill's legacy lives on in the hearts of those he touched throughout his life. He will be remembered for his kindness, adventurous spirit, and love for family and friends.
He is survived by his beloved children, Derek (Stephanie) and Brandon, his cherished grandchildren, Morgan and Allison; and his sister, Nancy. Bill is preceded in death by his parents, Ernie and Lois; his sister Carolyn Barnett; and his grandson, Matthew William Courtain.
