Larry Dean Pittman- Obituary

Larry Dean Pittman passed away on March 17, 2024, leaving behind a legacy that touched the lives of many. Born on October 29, 1952, in Jacksonville, North Carolina, to Alvin and Ella Mae (Hewitt) Pittman, Larry was raised in Rural North Carolina alongside his three siblings.  His upbringing on a tobacco farm instilled in him a strong work ethic from a young age, as he assisted his father in the toils of crop cultivation and tobacco processing.

After completing high school where he even worked as a school bus driver, Larry pursued higher education with a focus on wildlife biology. The looming Vietnam War led to his drafting for military service; however, fate intervened with a ceasefire saving him from active duty overseas. It was during this period that he met his beloved wife, Pam, a fellow army member and nursing student. Their bond blossomed into marriage on October 4, 1975.

Their military journey led them to Germany where they welcomed their first child, Carla, before eventually settling in Oregon post their dedicated service. Larry's commitment to serving others continued as he joined the Portland Fire Bureau, dedicating over 27 years to firefighting, EMT duties, and community outreach.

Apart from his professional pursuits, Larry found solace in hunting and fishing whenever time permitted. Yet above all else, he treasured moments spent with his family—cheering at soccer games and boasting proudly of his five grandchildren. In his later years, woodworking became his passion as he crafted furniture with meticulous detail.

Larry will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He is survived by his loving wife, Pam; children, Carla (Pittman) Phelps, Elizabeth Pittman, Travis Pittman; grandchildren, Courtney (Phelps) Mills (Vontrell), Madelyn Phelps, Tanner Phelps (Aubrey ), Carter Phelps, Pyeper Pittman; great-grandchildren Vontrell M. Mills II and Vontrell M. Mills III; His Mother Ella Mae Pittman; Brothers, Alvin Pittman, Allen Pittman and Sister, June (Pittman) Morton (Steve) as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In honoring Larry's memory, let us cherish the values he embodied—hard work, dedication to family, and unwavering service to others. May he rest in peace knowing the love and admiration felt for him will endure through the memories shared by those whose lives he enriched.

My heart breaks for you Pam at the loss of your beloved husband. I recall when you were falling in love and marrying at the Presidio. I wish we had been able to all meet again at the Presidio...but along came Covid. May God help you and your family find peace knowing he is in the loving arms of our Heavenly Father! Patti (Silliman, Hojem) Besler
